Long Thanh Gallery: A Worthwhile Visit in Nha Trang

Long Thanh Gallery is located in Nha Trang, a place that usually attracts Russian cash-flouting tourists and European beach bums who don’t have much interest in culture.

Nha Trang

I realise I might be a little biased in my opinion of Nha Trang due to my own personal experience there, but there is no denying it is not a pretty place: it seems to have very little that makes it special. It is a holiday resort and a fairly ugly one at that.

The 6km stretch of golden sand and the picture perfect crashing waves are probably what save Nha Trang. People will still take the chance to bathe on this golden beach which, despite its coarseness, is very picturesque.

However, Nha Trang does have some good points. One of which is Long Thanh Gallery.

Long Thanh Gallery

During a visit to Nha Trang, something to give a little inspiration to any aspiring photographer or holiday snapper is the Long Thanh Gallery, displaying Mr Long Thanh’s beautiful black and white captures of day-to-day Vietnamese life. The simplicity is quite breathtaking.

Long Thanh Gallery displays exquisite captures from the first black and white image that Vietnam’s most prominent photographer developed in 1964, at 13 years old, right through to the modern images he still captures today in and around Nha Trang.

However, his modern images have not changed much since his early days, as he is one of the few photographers who still uses film: he develops his photos by hand using expensive black and white photograph paper imported from the UK.

All of Long Thanh’s images are processed in black and white, and though visitors to the gallery could feel overwhelmed by such lack of colour, the images are full of life and feeling. Click here to read about the huge array of equipment the Long Thanh Gallery boasts.

Long Thanh Gallery displays these breath-taking images with a simplicity to match the lives that they reflect. If you do find yourself in the not-so-wonderful Nha Trang, then make sure you pay the gallery a visit.
