Monkey Forest, Ubud, Bali

Yes, of course we did make the obligatory visit to Monkey Forest while we were in Ubud in Bali.

The area commonly known as Monkey Forest is a large wooded park in Ubud with several ruined temples dating from the 1300s.

But most people go to see the monkeys. Personally I’m not a huge fan of millions of vicious wild monkeys, but hey, when in Bali.

So we paid our 20,000 rp to get into the park and we were free to roam around and terrorise the monkeys – or was it the other way around?

Here’s what we saw:

Monkey Forest

I’m the king of this jungle

. Monkey Forest. Monkey Forest. Monkey Forest

Monkey Forest

The guardian of the forest

Monkey Forest

Is it me, or is he getting ready to pounce?

Monkey Forest

The heart of the forest is a stinky pond and loads of jungle-like vines.

They go topless in Monkey Forest. Male monkey eyeing up female monkey, female monkey eyeing up bananas!

Monkey Forest

Come ‘ere son and quit monkeying around.

Monkey Forest

Come on, it’s not the end of the world, there’ll be more bananas later. Give us a hug.

I warned you silly pig that if you didn’t shut your mouth I would sit on your head.

Monkey Forest

The lesser known legend of the four wise monkeys: think no evil, hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil

Monkey Forest

And hear no sense

Monkey Forest

And be attacked by think no evil

Monkey Forest

Get it OFFFF me!

Monkey Forest

See a banana, pick it up, all day long you’ll have… [insert ending]

Monkey Forest

Just one more… I can manage one more!

Monkey Forest

Damn it. I really shouldn’t have eaten that last one.

Monkey Forest

Right, I’m bored. I’m going to look for some action.

Monkey Forest Conclusion:

Go.

No it’s not the amazing cultural experience of Saraswati Temple just a couple of km away but it’s fun. And hey, you don’t have a monkey forest just down the road from where you live, do you? So you might as well go while you’re in Ubud.

Just a few words of advice: enjoy the monkeys from afar if you can. They are vicious wild animals. Don’t tease them and don’t buy bananas unless you want to be mobbed, and if you do either of the above, don’t be surprised if they nick your camera just to piss you off. And no, you won’t get it back.

Enjoy!

Oh these photos are so good – just love the captions, we went to a monkey forest in The Gambia and as you say you just have to do it, I’m not that fond of the monkies jumping on me either they are very vicious.
