New Destination: Phu Quoc

Happy New Year dear friends! I hope you’ve had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to all the great travels the new year is going to bring. My own Christmas was very quiet – everyone took it in turns to get sick! Oh dear. Well not to worry, we are all okay now.

I would like to start the new year with a new destination. I have a really exciting trip to tell you about that I took just last month.

Would you be happy if one of these chairs was yours?

This latest series is going to be about Phu Quoc.

Phu Quoc Island

Have you heard of Phu Quoc? It’s a beautiful island in the south of Vietnam.

Phu Quoc Sunset

The trip to Phu Quoc was a surprise present for Toni for his 40th birthday. That’s right, we’re not spring chickens anymore!

We weren’t planning a big faraway trip this year because of an exciting new project that I’ll tell you all about next month. So I wanted to surprise him by taking him somewhere warm and beautiful. And as I would be paying for the whole thing myself, I thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea if that place was cheap too!

Phu Quoc fun!

But where to go? I mean when you have practically the whole world as your starting point, things get quite intimidating quite early on. Damn, was that a first world problem? Sorry.

I considered many places for a relaxing fortnight of winter sun, such as Caribbean islands, Zanzibar, other places in Africa, I liked the idea of Philippines, even Thailand was a strong contender.

Why Visit Phu Quoc?

I think it’s clear why visit Phu Quoc, right?

As well as cheap, hot, sunny, beautiful and with great beaches, I was also looking for a destination that was easy, simple and stress free. I didn’t want an adventure backpacking holiday; I wanted everything taken care of. Nor did I want somewhere where you had to worry too much about what clothes you wear or whether people would pester the living daylights out of you to buy things or somewhere that didn’t feel very safe.

Bingo!

When the island of Phu Quoc popped into my head I knew I had my destination. A relatively small island, white beaches and palm trees galore: beautiful weather in winter and, being in Vietnam, cheap!

I was looking for somewhere quiet

Normally Phu Quoc is a place where people stay for just a few days after hectic backpacking tours around Vietnam, before going on to tackle Cambodia, or the other way round. In fact, we had even been to Phu Quoc before when we backpacked around Vietnam in 2011.

But like most people that visit the island, on that occasion we just stayed on Long Beach (the main resort) recovering from the previous three weeks of charging around the country. And then it was time to move on again.

The only thing you have to worry about is the coconuts

This time I wanted to do it differently: just Phu Quoc. Just a series of beaches, good food and a few excursions. I’m pleased to say I chose the right destination.

Simple life

What about you? If you had to choose a destination for a relaxing yet exciting holiday for someone’s birthday, where would you take them?

Over the next few weeks I will share my Phu Quoc story. Just as soon as we are finished with Sri Lanka. Step into my shoes…
