The Best Boat Trip in Puerto Pollensa

Last weekend, thanks to Toni from Click-Mallorca.com, I went on the best boat trip in Puerto Pollensa. No, the best boat trip in Mallorca. In fact, the most luxurious boat I’ve ever been on…

It was the Gran Atalaya sailing boat in Puerto Pollensa.

From the moment we met Sergio and Javier I was confident that we were going to have a great time. And from the moment I set foot aboard the Gran Atalaya, there was a whole new benchmark against which all future and past boat trips would be compared.

If you happen to visit Puerto Pollensa in Mallorca and do only one thing, then let it be a day on the Gran Atalya sailing boat.

The Best Boat Trip in Puerto Pollensa

We were met on the wharf in Puerto Pollensa at 10am by Sergio, the owner of the Gran Atalaya sailing boat. He took us in a dingy across to where the boat was anchored and we were helped aboard by the First Mate, Javier.

The boat was magnificent. The first word I managed was “wow!”

We were shown around the ample deck of the 70ft sailing boat. We were invited to make ourselves completely at home and were told just to ask whenever we wanted food or drink.

We could sunbathe on the comfortable mattresses on the deck, we could sit at the table and enjoy the view, or we could roam around at our leisure.

We explored the cabins and the interior, which were all stunning. All the while I kept thinking to myself, I could actually live here! I’ve never been much of a boat person but as we were shown the beautiful lounges, gorgeous suites and the small but practical kitchen, I really felt like becoming one. Even the bathroom was lovely.

The Gran Atalaya

Once we were sitting comfortably on the deck with a beer, and after Javier had effortlessly hauled the sails up, Sergio told us a little about the boat’s history as he steered us smoothly out away from the port and we glided majestically toward Formentor.

The boat had originally been built for an English ambassador in South Africa in 1941. The Englishman planned to sail around the world on it after his retirement – which he did.

The boat, in fact, screamed of stiff upper lip and even the plug sockets were the three-pin ones found in the UK. The varnished wooden fixtures were very elegant and very British. The boat had quite a regal feel to it.

How About a Trip on the Gran Atalaya?

You can go on this boat too; Sergio and Javier will happily take you out sailing for half a day, a full day, or even a week.

The boat sleeps seven plus two crew members.

They regularly sail from Puerto Pollensa all the way across to Menorca with guests who want to take a couple of days’ break. The people visit Menorca and might even stay on the island for a night before coming back.

All trips can be tailor-made to suit the amount of time and money you have. The one-day excursion sails from Puerto Pollensa around the bay to Manresa and from there generally heads towards Formentor and some small coves around the area.

For a full day trip with all food and drink included it costs around 800€ for the whole boat. So if you have a group of eight, it works out very economical. This price also includes fuel. But you don’t have to charter the entire boat; you can also just book to go on the boat and share it with other people too.
