The Best Place to Eat in Unawatuna

There are loads of places to eat in Unawatuna and some of them are well worth a visit. I had some of my nicest meals in Sri Lanka in Unawatuna. The Best Place to Eat in Unawatuna, without a doubt, is Mettha’s Homecooked Meals.

In another post I will tell you the rest of my top places for food in Unawatuna, but today I want to focus on this one tiny restaurant. Eating here is a truly authentic experience. Enjoy!

Mettha’s Homecooked Meals

This is the place to go for rice and curry in Unawatuna. Mettha’s restaurant looks like someone’s house, open to the street, with a few tables and chairs filling the space. And I guess that’s what this place basically is.

Mettha is really sweet and very attentive and she cooks you a meal the way she’d cook her family’s meals.

You absolutely have to book if you want to eat at Mettha’s Homecooked Meals. Because Mettha has to go out and get the shopping and plan the meals for her three or four tables. And she is always full so plan ahead.

The rice and curry here was the best we had for sure in Unawatuna and certainly one of the best in Sri Lanka.

We paid 1,900rs (12,40€) for both of us for rice and curry, plus an extra dish of chicken to share, and water. We were absolutely stuffed but we couldn’t stop eating. She even came and asked us if we would like more of one thing or another.

Authentic Food

The food was out of this world: the dhal curry (my favourite in Sri Lanka) was divine and the sambal was amazing. It was so hot my mouth was on fire but I couldn’t stop shovelling it in!

The extra dish of chicken that Mettha put in the middle of the table was unnecessary in terms of quantity but was also so so good! But be warned: this dish was extremely spicy. Man, it was good! My stomach is rumbling, is yours?

So if you’re going to Unawatuna, don’t hesitate to look up Mettha’s Homecooked Meals and have a serious tastebud party! Click here for the location of the best place to eat in Unawatuna.
