Visit East Java’s Volcanoes From Yogyakarta, NOT From Bali

For travellers in Indonesia it is very important that if you want to visit the volcanoes of Bromo and Ijen in East Java, you do it on your way from Yogyakarta to Bali and NOT the other way round.

Thankfully this is the way that we did it when we were in Indonesia. If we’d gone from Bali to Yogyakarta we would have spent a lot more money…

Why Visit East Java’s Volcanoes of Bromo and Ijen Travelling from Yogyakarta to Bali and NOT the Other Way Round:

Ferry to Bali

One of the ferries that goes between Ketapang and Gilimanuk

When we did the volcanoes tour to Bromo and Ijen, we set off at 0730am from Yogyakarta and spent the whole day driving to Bromo.

We visited Mount Bromo the following day and Mount Ijen the day after that.

We paid 700,000 rp per person for the tour and that included the jeep tour at Bromo, the minibus journeys from Yogyakarta to and between the volcanos and transport to the ferry port at Ketapang at the end of it, as well as two nights’ accommodation with breakfast.

When we were in Bali, we were SHOCKED to see prices upwards of 2 million rp to do the same tour backwards.

So if you want to save 100€ per person, do the tour from Yogyakarta to Bali and not the other way round.

I know what you are thinking; that there must be something more included when you do the tour from Bali to Yogyakarta to justify such a huge price difference. And that was my first thought too, so I did some investigation and I found that everything, even the hotel selection, was the same.

Visit East Java's Volcanoes From Yogyakarta, NOT From Bali

Arriving at Bali

However, I should note that the tour from Bali did include the transport to the ferry and the ferry to Java. Plus, this tour went from Ubud, which is a four hour drive to the ferry port. Even so, when you calculate what we paid from Yogyakarta to Ubud via the volcanoes, the price from Ubud to Yogyakarta is still outrageous.

From Bali:

Price for Bromo / Ijen Tour from Bali: 2,100,000 rp. This includes transport from Ubud to ferry port and ferry to Java.

From Yogyakarta:

Price for Bromo / Ijen Tour from Yogyakarta: 700,000 rp
Ferry from Ketapang, Java to Gilimanuk, Bali: 13,000 rp
Taxi from Gilimanuk to Ubud: 500,000 rp between 4 persons (125,000 rp per person)
Total cost of tour per person: 838,000 rp

That gives a total saving of 1,262,000 rp (approx. 86€) per person just for doing the tour from Yogyakarta instead of from Bali.

So if you were asking the question: why do the East Java volcanoes tour from Yogyakarta and finish in Bali instead of the other way round, now you have the answer!

And if you ask me why there is such a huge price difference, I really couldn’t tell you.
